I Imagine thse inner resources were intellectual: their education had provided them with material to play with in their head so to speak. Is this what the father meant?

I like the detail that the children were looking morose: outward appaerance doesn't necessarily reflect inner state.

I lived in Paris for twenty years and can attest to this: The French have inner resources indeed.

What a quote! The next time someone asks me why I never get on my phone in waiting rooms or in line, I'm going to say "I have inner resources" and leave it at that.
