lol this is excellent, put me in mind of --- "without something to hate, we should lose the very spring of thought and action. Life would turn to a stagnant pool, were it not ruffled by the jarring interests"

But why do you hate his work so much? I'm a painter and love him, he is very brilliant in his ideas and did a whole incredible research on lenses and mirrors. I'm just curious of course, I respect your taste

Perhaps it was just a mushroom-induced exaggeration of a slight aversion but it’s something about the colors that makes me feel itchy

I understand the color itchiness, it is indeed a crazy palette, but a very brave one. I don't think the palette is chosen to be pretty or pleasurable, unlike other painters maybe... I guess it's difficult to put words on personal taste, apparently it takes us half a millisecond to decide whether or not we like something.

I love Hockney but I'm always shocked that anyone else does and that he is so successful. I enjoyed hearing about how much you hate him because to me this makes the world make sense.

Silly, love the sentiment. Hate is so satisfying. But I enjoy Hockney’s paintings, especially his dog collection.

I once went to see Radiohead on acid and thought, "What's the big deal? They're not that good." But I love Radiohead. Not doubting your Hockney judgment. It just seemed to rhyme with my Radiohead experience.

music can be more of an acquired taste in that way, but I find that I don't change my mind about what immediately is visually beautiful versus what is somehow emotionally obscene.

What's funny is that I was already a huge Radiohead fan at the time. The psychedelics were just intrusive in making me annoyed and sort of distanced from the experience (not the usual immersive feel one expects).

"What work it is to hate, so vividly, the things you hate."

An excellent 144 word essay from Catherine - we all know one of these types - perhaps we are one, sometimes..
